Target Panic, 2009–13

Target Panic (2008-12) is a series of 100 gouache drawings based on pistol and sniper targets. These targets, used in shooting practice and shooting competitions, were selected to emphasize the abstract quality of the images and to identify a point of commonality between pure abstraction and the essential iconoclasm of gun culture.

The title Target Panic, refers to a condition that affects competition shooters, who after thousands of hours of practice find they are no longer able to keep a steady hand or shoot straight. Target Panic is a psychological affliction that severs the link between hand, mind and eye.

Target Panic is a metaphor for our present state of information overload, a state in which we find ourselves overwhelmed and unable to focus on a single target or goal. In our current political climate we are told that everyone and everything are dangerous. To let fear be our guide and to forego our values and reason itself.
