High Desert Test Sites 5

Circumstances, was conceived and realized for the exhibition High Desert Test Sites 5 in Joshua Tree, California, curated by Andrea Zittel and Lisa Anne Auerbach. On a two acre site at the end of Hidden Paradise Road I tunneled under six large boulders using simple hand tools. In this high desert location, the soil type is known as caliche, and is the consistency of poorly set concrete and it took between 4 and fourteen hours to tunnel under the individual boulders. I then tied a single strand of black yarn around the rocks and filled in the displaced soil, leaving as little disturbance as possible. The six pairs of photographs on this page show the six boulders, front and back.
