The Neighborhood I Grew Up in Buried Underground, 1999

Sandy Hook, Connecticut

What does it mean for a neighborhood, a town, or a city to be erased. War has leveled cities from Carthage to Homs, Nagasaki to Cologne, Hiroshima to Aleppo.  Nature has been responsible for the obliteration of Pompeii under volcanic ash; Lahaina, Hawaii to wildfire; leveled part of the Atlas Mountains in Morocco via earthquake; and destroyed large parts of Derna, Libya via flood.

The Neighborhood I Grew Up in Buried Underground, was conceived of as an act of destruction and one of restoration. The work consisted of a scale model of the neighborhood I lived in from 2nd to 12th grade in Sandy Hook, Connecticut, buried in the backyard of my childhood home. The sculpture proposed the destruction of this neighborhood, the burial of its houses, and the return of the land to its uninhabited state.
